Each month, as part of the Anne Hutch has H.E.A.R.T. program, we select a specific ethical habit we believe is critical to ensuring a safe and supportive school environment in which all students can learn at high levels. Throughout the month, as a school community, we seek a deeper understanding of the habit and come to an agreement about what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like at Anne Hutchinson School. In the month of September, we will focus on kindness.
This year’s schoolwide read-aloud for September, Carol McCloud’s Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids, emphasizes the power of bucket filling in our school community. McCloud’s engaging picture book teaches us that “a bucket filler is a loving, caring person who says and does nice things to make others feel special.” Quite simply, when you treat others with kindness and respect, you fill their bucket! And most importantly, our very best learning takes place when we are feeling safe, comfortable, and happy -in other words – when our buckets are full! Great conversations with your child throughout the month of September (and beyond) can begin with “Tell me about the buckets you filled today!”
