Our Word of the Month for June is Independent!
Good Deed Day will be on Monday, June 24th! Wear your red Waverly shirt!
Throughout this month, we will explore all of the ways in which your child has become more independent. We’d encourage you to discuss this with your child and continue the trend at home.
Our Good Deed for this month will be to collect snack items for the Ronald McDonald House. We will have this collection from now until Monday, June 24th. Suggested snacks include:
- Granola bars
- Protein bars
- Fruit snacks
- Trail mix
Be sure to mark any items as donations, so they are not confused with classroom snacks. Thanks in advance for your support!
Our Final Workshop of the Year… Keeping your Children Engaged over The Summer
June 13th, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Parents often ask how they can help keep their child from falling victim to the “Summer Slide.” This is when students lose many of the important skills they have been working so diligently to develop throughout the school year. If this is a question for you, we encourage you to join us for our final workshop of the school year. During this important hour, you will hear from our teachers about ways to keep your child motivated and learning throughout the sunny days of summer. (Hint: It’s not only about reading and writing!) You’ll also receive a calendar jam packed with activities. Mark your calendars to attend this workshop! It’s one not to be missed! We will even have a representative from the Eastchester Library on hand to share information about summer programming. (The workshop is followed by a PTA meeting.)
First Grade Concert-
Thursday, June 20th, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.
Our first graders are moving on up! Please join us in the Waverly gym for our first graders’ culminating performance, where they will showcase the skills they’ve been learning during their two years at Waverly. Children should wear their Waverly t-shirt or another red shirt. Kindly note the times below, and on our website, under “Announcements.” The PTA will host a first grade family picnic that afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m.
Cavalli, Zanzano, and
Myers (1st gr students only)
On the day of the concert, families will be able to enter from the Bellew Avenue entrance (through the parking lot), just as you did for the Winter Concert. We will not use the main entrance. Doors will open at 9:15 a.m. for the first session, and 10:15 a.m. for the second. As you are aware, parking will be very limited, and thus it is recommended to carpool.
Apart from the concert, this is still a day of instruction for us until 11:40 a.m. There will be a PTA picnic celebration on Thursday, June 20th as well, starting at 3:00 p.m., when families are formally celebrating “moving up.”
With that being said, if you intend to pick up your child from school after either session of the concert, please follow the guidelines below to ensure the safety of all students at Waverly:
- Send a note to your child’s teacher via the Backpack Express on the morning of the concert, indicating that you will pick your child up. (Last minute dismissal changes are not only very difficult for us, they are upsetting to the children.)
- At the end of the concert, kindly depart from the gymnasium and walk around to the main entrance of the building.
- At 10:10 a.m./11:10 a.m., we will reopen the doors to allow parents from each session to pick up any “walkers” who will leave early.
- Children who have brought in change of dismissal letters will be signed out and may leave for the day.
- You are encouraged to return at 3 p.m. for the PTA first grade picnic.
Don’t forget to have your child wear his/her Waverly shirt, or any red shirt!
The PTA’s Annual First Grade Family Picnic will be held on Thursday, June 20th, from 3-5 p.m. on the Waverly field
This will be a great send-off for our families. Join us in celebrating with music, fun and an ice cold treat! Please bring your own chair, blanket and picnic food, if you wish. There will be one free Kona ice provided for each first grader. Additional Kona ice will be available for purchase. (Cash only.) Reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Little Critter Club will meet on Saturday, June 8th, from 10-11 a.m. at the Eastchester Library
Did you ever wonder how scientists study insects in a lab, or how maggots eat? If you have, then here is the club for you! Anne Hutchinson Third grader, Anusha, will share information about insects, and there will be an insect paper craft. There will be live black soldier fly larvae to examine! Please bring an insect poem or funny story to share during the “Show and Tell” segment. Refreshments will be served.
If you will be moving and your child will no longer be attending Eastchester schools, please be sure to write a letter to inform our office as soon a possible. Thanks!
Visiting Waverly’s Playground
We are fortunate to have a great playground on which Waverly students are able to play during recess, as well as some of their physical education classes. With this in mind, please refrain from using the playground during school hours. This is particularly tempting when waiting for dismissal, so we appreciate your cooperation.

Please note that due to the large number of photos we have from the Fun Run (courtesy of Mrs. Maria Davino) a link for pictures will be shared in an upcoming correspondence from the PTA.
