Waverly Wellness… We need your help!

June 17th, 2019

Dear Families,

A few months ago, I requested your feedback regarding our Wellness Program through the completion of an on-line survey. Essentially, we were looking at three areas:

  • Your awareness of our Wellness Program
  • Signs of anxiety that your child may exhibit at home
  • Strategies that your child utilizes at home from our program

Survey data indicated that 80% of the responding parents were aware of Waverly’s Wellness Program. We found this data to be encouraging, and we are working with the PTA Wellness Committee to explore ways to involve more parents next year.

We found a strong relationship between parents who were aware of the program and those who saw signs of anxiety in their children. We are interested in exploring this further to determine if parents who already saw signs of anxiety in their children were more likely to make note of our program and the strategies shared, or perhaps the opposite, once parents were aware of our program, they were more likely to identify signs of anxiety in their children. This is important information, as it will help us to plan more effectively for future work with children and their families.

Finally, many parents shared that they observed their child using some of the breathing techniques that have been shared at school. We were thrilled to see the carryover of skills from school being employed at home, and are excited to continue to work.

To that end, I am asking parents to take the survey again, as we wrap up this school year. Please complete the survey using the link below. It will be available from today through the last day of school, so please do take a moment to complete it. It takes only a few minutes, but the information we glean will help us to improve our programming for the upcoming school year.

I thank you for your partnership! If you are looking for ways to address your own wellness, be sure to check out the Book Corner. There is a suggestion for a text for parents as well with a special book signing and discussion at Barnes and Noble this Friday, 6/21. Be sure to check it out!

First Grade Legacy Rocks

First graders have been engaged in painting rocks during their art class to adorn our new outdoor classroom. Thanks to the PTA and Mrs. Larrea for supporting this effort. We are all looking forward to seeing how the rocks beautify our outdoor space.

The rocks will be installed once our boiler project is complete. I’ll be posting photos on Twitter over the summer. (@MariKDoyle)

Throughout the month of June, we have begun exploring all of the ways in which your child has become more independent over the course of the year. We played a game called, “Just Like Me.” Students were encouraged to point to themselves if they were able to engage in the activities presented without adult assistance. This included packing and unpacking their backpacks, buckling their seat belts, cleaning up toys, and writing their first and last name- without being reminded!

We will continue to collect snack items for the Ronald McDonald House through June 24th. Be sure to mark any items as donations, so they are not confused with classroom snacks. As always, thanks for your support.

First Grade Concert- THIS

Thursday, June 20th, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

On the day of the concert, families will be able to enter from the Bellew Avenue entrance (through the parking lot), just as you did for the Winter Concert. We will not use the main entrance. Doors will open at 9:15 a.m. for the first session, and 10:15 a.m. for the second. As you are aware, parking will be very limited, and thus it is recommended to carpool.

Apart from the concert, this is still a day of instruction for us until 11:40 a.m. There will be a PTA picnic celebration on Thursday, June 20th as well, starting at 3:00 p.m., when families are formally celebrating “moving up.”

With that being said, if you intend to pick up your child from school after either session of the concert, please follow the guidelines below to ensure the safety of all students at Waverly:

  • Send a note to your child’s teacher via the Backpack Express on the morning of the concert, indicating that you will pick your child up. (Last minute dismissal changes are not only very difficult for us, they are upsetting to the children.)
  • At the end of the concert, kindly depart from the gymnasium and walk around to the main entrance of the building.
  • At 10:10 a.m./11:10 a.m., we will reopen the doors to allow parents from each session to pick up any “walkers” who will leave early.
  • Children who have brought in change of dismissal letters will be signed out and may leave for the day.
  • You are encouraged to return at 3 p.m. for the PTA first grade picnic.

Don’t forget to have your child wear his/her Waverly shirt, or any red shirt!

Fancy is not just for Nancy!

“Fancy Day” will be held on June 25th!

On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of Waverly, I’d like to extend a hearty THANK YOU! Due to your support, we were able to exceed by raising $20,000 to support our Wellness program at Waverly. In appreciation of your fundraising efforts, we will make our next to last day of school a little fancy! Please encourage your child to wear his or her favorite fancy attire to school. We will cheer on our students as they embark on their next academic adventure in first or second grade. Don’t forget a snack. Students will enjoy their snack on a special “Fancy Day” placemat. (There will be an 11:40 a.m. dismissal.)

Visiting Waverly’s Playground

We are fortunate to have a great playground on which Waverly students are able to play during recess, as well as some of their physical education classes. With this in mind, please refrain from using the playground during school hours. This is particularly tempting when waiting for dismissal, so we appreciate your cooperation.
