April 27th, 2020
Dear Waverly Families,
As I share this message, we are beginning the seventh week since our departure from school. We know that this time has been one of great change and we have all had to be flexible as we adjust to what’s become the new normal.
I came across an article on the PBS website and its message was one that truly resonated with me. The article, entitled, “Parenting during Coronavirus: You are enough” by Rebecca Parlakian, can be found in the Book Corner. I encourage you to read it and give yourself a moment to absorb its message.
We know the struggles you are facing, as many of us are facing them as well. From health concerns and childcare struggles while working from home, to finances and what’s been dubbed “crisis schooling,” we are right there with you. Please remember that. We’re all in this together.
I’d like to send a hearty note of thanks to families who have tuned in for our Morning Meeting videos. I appreciate the emails and photos I’ve received of students joining in! Keep up the good work!
The word of the month is UNIQUE. Through our virtual Morning Meeting videos, we’ve shared ideas about how being unique means being “special and different.”
For our Good Deed this month, you are encouraged to have your child create a unique card for a patient at Lawrence Hospital. Please either mail or drop off cards the local address below:
83 North Road
Eastchester, New York 10709
We will celebrate Good Deed Day on Wednesday, April 29th!
Please join me in celebrating our teachers who received tenure this past week:
- Mrs. Amanda Falcone
- Mrs. Molly Koller
- Mrs. Dawn Rubbo (shared with Anne Hutchinson School)
Did you know that In the coming months, we will begin the process of placing students in their new classes for next year? It is quite an arduous task! We strive to achieve heterogeneous groups and balanced classes. We consider a number of factors, some of which include: social emotional development, academic program needs, language proficiency, and even future school. Our placement teams work hard to create the best learning environment for all Waverly youngsters. Given the thought put into this process on our end, you can surely appreciate why we do not take parent requests. That being said, if you would like to forward information you have about your child’s specific placement, please do so by Friday, May 8th, 2020. (This deadline has been extended from May 1st.)
- Requests for a specific teacher will not be honored.
- Do not consider discussions with teachers regarding placement to be a substitute for this letter writing endeavor.
- Younger siblings will not necessarily have the same teacher as the elder sibling.
- Information for incoming second graders to Anne Hutchinson and Greenvale should be sent directly to Waverly.
- Letters received after the May 8th deadline can not be taken into consideration.
- As in the past, you will be able to view your child’s placement via Home Access in late August, after we have screened any new students.
Did you know that Waverly School has been included on a list of New York State Recognition Schools?
We are thrilled to receive this honor as an acknowledgement of the hard work our staff puts in each and every day. As we approach Teacher Appreciation Week, please join me in thanking all of our staff members for their creativity, persistence, and dedication- to their craft, and most importantly, to our students.
Throughout our extended closure the staff has been teaching and learning. Learning new software, means of presentation and new ways in which to be connected. We remain committed to our students and families. We are… Waverly.
