The Waverly Whisper for June 15th

June 15th, 2020

Dear Waverly Families,

As many of you are aware, Governor Cuomo has called for an easement of restrictions to allow for high school graduations to begin in person at the end of the month. This is exciting news for our Eastchester High School Seniors who celebrated their graduation this past weekend! For our kindergarten and first grade students, we are excited to share final details for our  planned activities, as outlined below:

  • Kindergarten Alphabet Parade- Submit by THIS WEDNESDAY, June 17th at 3 p.m.

(Video will be distributed on Friday, June 19th)

Kindergarten students are invited to create a short video displaying a “costume” related to their assigned letter. For example, if your child received the letter “Rr,” they can dress up as a rabbit, a race car driver or a rainbow! Using items from home is surely best! It can be a wonderful example of recycling, another R word! Kindly refer to the letter from your child’s classroom teacher for additional information and a link to record the video. My letter is “X.”

  • First Grade Moving Up Concert- Monday, June 22nd, at 10, 10:45 & 11:30 a.m.

Get your red Waverly shirt ready! Another Waverly tradition, this concert marks the culmination of two years of musical experiences. Families are invited to join in and sing songs with their first grader that they have learned with Mrs. Ness. In addition to the special songs we’ll sing, we will also share videos crafted by our teachers especially for our rising second graders. A Zoom link for the event will be sent in an email on Friday, 6/19 along with the pass for the Waverly Wave (see below) . We have divided the group into three in an attempt to create a more personal experience.

We will sing the following songs, and utilize the schedule below:

  • America The Beautiful
  • I Like Waverly
  • This Land is Your Land
  • Word of the Month Medley
  • S.O.A.R. Song- Moving Up Edition

We also have two surprises, and can’t wait to share them with you.

  • Waverly Wave! -Thursday, June 25th. Be sure to see the schedule below. Each grade has been divided into two groups.

This final sendoff for our students will provide children and staff an opportunity to safely say farewell to one another. Staff will line up and you will be able to drive through the Waverly bus circle and receive cheers from us!

While there will be many staff members in attendance, and all are invited to join in, we ask that you note that not all staff members will be able to attend. Please honor and respect the needs of our staff at this time.

Important notes:

  • Families will enter the Immaculate Conception School (ICS- 53 Winter Hill Rd, Tuckahoe, NY 10707) upper parking lot from White Plains Road at the times shared below.
  • The Eastchester Police Department will escort us from the upper parking lot to the route along Main Street and into the Waverly bus circle.
  • We ask that there be one car per family, and that all families arrive by car and remain in their car for the entire route.
  • Be sure to print out the pass for your time and place it in on your dashboard.

For our first graders, this will be a great time to wear your “Quarantine” t-shirt sponsored by the PTA. For our kindergarten students, we encourage you to wear your Waverly shirt, or another red shirt.

As noted above, cars will enter the upper ICS parking lot from White Plains Road during the following times:

Parents picking up medication are asked to come to the side door near Main Street during the same allotted time period. A staff member will greet you and provide the medication we have been housing for your child. Once again, if there is a line, we ask that you wear a mask and maintain social distancing as you wait.

Be sure to follow the date and time above for pickup, as we will not be able to have items available if you arrive at a different date and/or time. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Don’t forget the “Wrap Up with Wellness” for students and families throughout the month of June.

Click on this link to get started today with an opportunity to be calm with mindfulness.

This month we have been focusing on being and becoming independent. This can be both a challenging and exciting opportunity for growth in students. I came across two articles, “Independence: The First Grade Edition,” by Angela Borchert and “How to Foster Independence” by Dr. Michelle Anthony. I encourage you to read these short articles as you look to develop greater independence in your children.

Did you know that the PTA Yearbook Committee will be distributing yearbooks in July when they are received? Check out their message below:

We hope this message finds you well. We wanted to reach out in regards to the Yearbook distribution.  We will be able to distribute yearbooks once we have a plan from the district in correlation with the current social distancing measures provided by NYS. The yearbook date of delivery is anticipated to be the first week of July, which is later than normal due to the COVID-19 delays. Once the order is received, the Yearbook Committee will work with the district to safely enter the school in order to unbox, sort/organize, and distribute, while following the current guidelines. We appreciate your understanding and patience while we work through the logistics. We will keep you informed with our distribution strategy once the date comes closer. Again, the Yearbook committee thanks you for the continued support in making this a memorable yearbook that our Waverly students can look back fondly at the memories made in school and at home. Stay well.

Did you know that you can order school supplies for your rising second grader?

The PTAs of Anne Hutchinson and Greenvale PTA have once again partnered with AHartz to order school supplies for the 2020-21 school year. This quick, no-hassle process will have your children’s supplies sent directly to the school.  Orders can be placed by clicking the link and selecting either elementary school.

Ordering has already begun. Due to this time of uncertainty, the ordering deadline is extended this year to July 24, 2020.  Once you place your order, you will receive an email confirmation.

This year some household items needed such as tissues and antibacterial wipes will need to be purchased separately and are unable to be included in the packets at this time. This will be explained on the website and from the school for those who choose to buy supplies on their own.

If you will be moving and your child will no longer be attending Eastchester schools, please be sure to write an email to inform our office as soon as possible. Thanks!
