We Are 100 Days Brighter!

Red shirts for TOMORROW, February 11th. It’s a secret!

February 10th, 2020

Dear Waverly Families,

We will be celebrating our first graders tomorrow, February 11th, with a special top secret event. We would like ALL Waverly students to wear their red Waverly shirt (or another red shirt) for our surprise! (Details will be revealed in June!)

Our word of the month will be courage. We’ve decided to add an element of choice this month, as students will be voting for the Good Deed. The options for students to select from include:

  1. Collecting can tops for The Ronald McDonald House
  2. Writing letters to sailors in support of their courageousness
  3. Engaging in another activity with their Kindness Project buddies (from last month).

Stay tuned for the results in the next Whisper.

Whatever the chosen good deed, we’ll celebrate on Friday, February 28th.

For students buying lunch, as you discuss the menu choices with your child, please be sure to include the fresh fruit and vegetable options, as well as snacks for purchase. Children are allowed to purchase one snack, and we encourage them to eat the snack in the cafeteria. For the safety of all children, no food should be consumed on any buses. (If your child attends an after school program, please send a labeled snack in their backpack, and remind them not to eat it on the bus.)

We’ve been making some changes to the school lunch program. If you are interested in learning more about this, please reach out to Mrs.Deb Ryba, Chair of the PTA Wellness Committee.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Did you know that your PTA membership dollars support the amazing Cultural Arts programming we have at Waverly? This includes the “Around the World” presentation we had recently in kindergarten, and the upcoming Theater Works show.

Did you know that 74% of our families are currently PTA members? In order to support our cultural arts programming, we’ll have a schoolwide pajama day when we reach 80% membership. So, please consider joining today! For more information, or to register, please reach out to ptamembertees@gmail.com

The Board of Education voted to place a bond referendum on the ballot for this spring. Parents are encouraged to click on the link on the district’s website to provide information. Community informational forums will be held on each campus, all beginning at 7 p.m.:

Feb. 26 at MS/HS Auditorium

March 2 at AH Auditorium

March 10 at GV All Purpose Room

March 19 at Waverly Cafeteria

Any family, staff member, or community member may attend any meeting at any school. Each meeting will have the same content.

As temperatures have dipped, we have noticed an increase in the number of students being driven to school. Please be sure to take a look at the reminders above to ensure the safety of all students.

Did You Know?

February 3rd, 2020

Dear Waverly Families,

During Morning Meeting last week, we discussed hand washing as an act of kindness. After watching the video, CDC Video: Wash Your Hands, we practiced rubbing our hands together while singing the alphabet song. We encourage you to watch the video again at home, and practice proper hand washing.

For more information on hand washing, and other topics of interest to your family’s health, I encourage you to visit the Nurse’s Corner.

I’ve added a new section to the Whisper each week. “Did You Know” will include an interest item that you won’t want to miss:

Did you know that we had a PTA meeting last week with a presentation on balancing technology use for ourselves and our children?  If you missed the meeting, I encourage you to check out the Digital Technology Use Questionnaire and the Technology and Screen Time document from the presentation. The presenter urged participants to use the survey to gauge our own comfort level with our responses, and make changes accordingly. Changes may include setting limits on screen time use and modeling the behaviors we wish to see in our children.

You are encouraged to read January’s PE Wellness  newsletter from Coach Caridi.

Our word of the month will be courage. We’ll talk about taking chances with challenging tasks, and making mistakes and learning from them. Please ask your child about it. We’ll share our Good Deed in next week’s Whisper.

The Eastchester-Tuckahoe Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Parents Night Out event on Friday, February 14th. For more information, contact Theresa Nicholson

Seeking Balance

Seeking balance: Providing tools parents need to help our children become mindful of

technology and screen-time

January 27th, 2020

Dear Waverly Families,

All parents are encouraged to attend the next PTA meeting THIS Thursday, January 30th, at 7:15 p.m. Below please find some information regarding the event. Join us, and bring a friend or neighbor, as this workshop is for everyone, K-12! For more information, see the flyer for the event.

Speaking of Technology…

We have had a number of students wearing electronic smart watches to school each day, and we’ve found them to be quite distracting for students as they try to play games and take pictures during instructional time. Please refrain from sending your child to school with one of these devices. Any children found to be wearing a device of this kind will be asked to put it in their backpack.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Be the “I” in KIND.

In celebration of our month of kindness, first grade classes have been paired with a kindergarten class, and have been engaged in The Kindness Project. Children have had opportunities to share with their peers in a variety of ways, including: playing games, learning songs and making crafts. Classes will continue to meet throughout this upcoming week.  I encourage you to ask your child about it.

The project will culminate on Friday, January 31st, with Good Deed Day. Be sure to have your child wear their red Waverly shirt and remind them to be the “I” in kind!

If you haven’t had a chance to read the article from the author of  Unseflie, Dr. Michele Borba, I encourage you to do so. Waverly staff have been reading her text this year, and the article, 50 Ways to Be a Great Example to a Child is a lovely accompaniment.

Sending thanks to Waverly families who came out for the Eastchester School Foundation’s Harlem Wizards game last Friday evening. The ESF supports Waverly in a multitude of ways, and we appreciate the support.

Please join me in extending a hearty thanks to Mrs. Kathi Dragonetti, who played valiantly in the  game on Friday. She is not only an outstanding athlete, she is also a good sport! She even had her very own cheering section!

To learn more about the foundation, or to support their efforts, you may visit their site,

The PTA’s Sweetheart Dance is Coming! See the PTA Corner for more information, and to sign-up.

The Eastchester-Tuckahoe Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Parents Night Out event on Friday, February 14th. For more information, contact Theresa Nicholson

In case you missed this earlier in the school year…

First grade teachers have compiled a list of strategies and activities to help parents better understand the expectations we have for first graders in mathematics for the entire year.

The items relevant for this time of year are highlighted in yellow. Additional examples of activities are posted on our website, under “Announcements.”

Kindness Starts With One…….

January 13th, 2020

Our word of the month is KIND. This month, we’ll focus on ways in which you can be kind to classmates, friends, family members and to ourselves. For this month’s good deed, we’re engaging in “The Kindness Project.” We’ve paired each class with another, and during the course of the month, each class will do something “kind” for their peers. We’ll highlight these activities throughout the month and during our culminating Good Deed Day, January 31st. Be sure to ask your child about it.

As I’ve mentioned previously, this year the staff at Waverly is reading the book, Unseflie, by Dr. Michele Borba. The author has also penned an article entitled, 50 Ways to Be a Great Example to a Child. I encourage you to check it out.

Three cheers to Waverly families who came out to Family Yoga Night on a brisk evening last Wednesday, and to the PTA for supporting this event with funds raised from last year’s Boosterthon. Thanks for all of your support!

Mr. Argos Gonzalez, of Little Flower Yoga presented many strategies to help us to:

  • Connect
  • Breathe
  • Move
  • Focus
  • Relax

In addition, as you are aware, each month Coach Caridi shares a newsletter showcasing the work students are doing with her during PE Wellness sessions. I’d like to take this time to repost newsletters from the first few months of school, as we encourage you to use some of the strategies at home. I hope you find this information useful.

Happy New Year 2020!

Family Yoga is THIS Wednesday!

January 6th, 2020

Happy New Year!

As we begin this new year, I’d like to personally express my sincerest thanks for the many cards and gifts I received. I truly appreciate your time and support!

We’ll have a new word for this new month and new year, and our word is kind. This month, we’ll discuss ways in which you can be kind to classmates, friends, family members and to ourselves.

If you’re looking for some ideas to infuse some more kindness in your home, I’d encourage you to read 7 Fun Ways to Teach Kindness To Kids, by Kaia Roman. The suggestions are a perfect match to many of the ideas we are promoting at Waverly. We will share the Good Deed of the Month in the next Whisper.

Flashing back to December…

We had a fantastic time at our final Morning Meeting of 2019. During this time, we celebrated families for their generous donation of toys to the ECAP  toy drive. We also revealed the winner of the annual Silly Sweater contest.

This year’s winner is….#18, Ms. Kelly Soares. Many congratulations to her!

Waverly siblings helping one another carry in items for December activities. Showing sisterly love is a responsible thing to do! (It’s also very kind and respectful!)

The Waverly PTA is happy to share that After School Club registration will open Monday, 1/6/20 at 6:00 pm and close on Friday 1/10/20 at 10:00 pm.  Clubs are open to both kindergarten and first grade students (note: kindergarteners are only permitted to register for 1 club).

Please visit this link to view Waverly’s offerings and to register: https://waverlypta.asapconnected.com/

Kindly remember that PTA membership is required for a student to attend an after school club. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

Happy Holidays from Waverly!

December 16th, 2019

Dear Waverly Families,

I would like to extend my thanks to all first grade parents who attended the Winter Concert last Friday. Led by our amazing music teacher, Mrs. Ness, families were able to see the fruits of their children’s labor over the past year and a half in music class.  The children were magnificent performers!

Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Tina Cataldi-Kearns to the Waverly office. We’d also like to thank Mrs. Xenia Kokkodis for her time filling in. We were so fortunate to have her!

As we approach the New Year, kindly read the reminder below:

During this school year, we engaged in activities and mini-lessons focusing on the following words during our Morning Meeting:

  • Community
  • Safe(ty)
  • Respect
  • Responsible

I would encourage you to use these words in discussions with your child, and look for ways in which they can practice these traits at home.

We also engaged in the following Good Deeds:

  • September: Creating a wall of smiles to greet students and visitors to Waverly
  • October: Crafting cards for patients and providing support for a Literacy Center at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
  • November: Providing support for a local family experiencing a medical crisis
  • December: Participating in a toy drive for local children

Participation in these Good Deeds brings our “words of the month” into real life. Thank you for your support of our efforts.

We encourage you to join us for Family Yoga on Wednesday, January 8th, 2020. Here is the link to sign up. Please note that space will be limited.

During this session, you’ll learn more about what your student is doing during PE Wellness sessions. Coach Caridi works with all elementary students at Waverly, Anne Hutchinson, and Greenvale. The curriculum is designed based on Physical Education content, The Ruler Approach, and social-emotional learning. This program is built to have students move, stretch, and work cooperatively in a classroom setting.

The lessons cover a wide range of activities and techniques that will help the student gain awareness of their bodies, emotions, and others around them. Meditation, yoga, and mindfulness are all linked into the PE/Wellness program. Coach Caridi begins and ends each class with a visualization technique to guide students to clear their minds.

We hope to see you there!

During the past two Wednesday afternoons, we held our annual Winter English as a New Language Family Workshops for kindergarten and first grade students and their families. I’d like to send my thanks to Ms. Jennifer Jagde and Ms. Jacqueline Santos for crafting the workshops, Adriana Chiappelli, Kathi Dragonetti, Christine Kelly, Greta Luka, Sara Mastocciolo, Estella Sasso, Kelly Soares, Rachel Tortorella and Nicole Ullrich for facilitating groups, and parents for being active participants.

10:30am- Borowsky, Demos, Schwartz, Zuzolo, Vaughan, and

Be sure to check out the lyrics, so your child can practice for the concert.

Looking for the perfect seat to view the concert? Check out the concert map

Children are encouraged to wear festive attire of any kind. Please avoid large hair bows, however, as it prevents the audience from seeing the children standing behind them! For safety, sneakers are always the best choice!

Kindly be mindful of the following:

  • All parents will enter from the rear parking lot off of Bellew Avenue (near the gym). There will be no admittance from the main lobby.
  • As always, parking is extremely limited. Please consider walking or carpooling, if possible.
  • If your child is singing during the first session, please be sure to leave promptly to allow someone a parking spot for the second session.
  • This is a regular school day for us!
  • Video of the concert is available for purchase

The Eastchester/Tuckahoe Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their “Parents Night Out” event on December 13, 2019 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Sign up using this link:

This month we will discuss the importance of being responsible. If you missed the article recommended in the Whisper last week on teaching children responsibility at home, you may wish to consider:

Are You Teaching Kids Responsibility? 50 Simple Challenges to Get You Started, by Cara Sue Achterberg. The author provides suggestions by age of the child. It is a worthy read!

We have three special activities this month:

First, we’ll support the ECAP Toy Drive this month. We will collect unwrapped toys for a local child in need throughout the month of December. Please send in any toy donation by Friday, December 20th!

Second, we will have our Silly Sweater Contest. Students will have a chance to vote for their favorite “Silly Sweater” worn by a Waverly staff member. The reveal will take place on Friday, December 20th during our Good Deed Day meeting. To get in the spirit, we are inviting students to wear a silly sweater of their own (instead of their red Wavelry shirt) on Friday, 12/20/19.

Last, but certainly not least, our first graders will serenade all of us on Thursday, 12/19, with some songs of the season from the winter concert.

We received the following message from the DiMarzo family, our November Good Deed recipients, and wanted to express our heartfelt thanks for your generosity:

Dear Waverly Family,

Thank you so much for thinking of our family during this difficult time. The gift cards will be put to good use. All your cards, pictures and gift cards put a smile on Nicholas’ face.

With all our love,

The DiMarzo Family

We also received the following from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, through our affiliation with The Loukoumi Foundation. St. Jude’s was the recipient of our October Good Deed.

The PE/Wellness program is taking off! Coach Caridi sees grades K-5 in Waverly, Anne Hutchinson, and Greenvale. The curriculum is designed based to incorporate elements of social-emotional learning, Physical Education content, and The Ruler Approach. This program is built to have students move, stretch, and work cooperatively in a classroom setting.

The lessons cover a wide range of activities and techniques that will help the student gain awareness of their bodies, emotions, and others around them. Meditation, yoga, and mindfulness are all linked into the PE Wellness program. Coach Caridi begins and ends each class with a visualization technique to guide students to clear their minds.

To help promote this aspect of the program, we invite you to the Little Flower Yoga Family Night on Wednesday, January 8th, 2020. At this event, you will be able to dive deeper into the practice and explore ways to connect your mind and body. Mark your calendars now, so you don’t miss out! A link to sign-up will be shared next week in The Whisper.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

December 2nd, 2019

Dear Waverly Families,

It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also the most challenging for us to get our students outside. Here are some reminders for the season for your child:

  • Wear a coat. Once the temperature dips, it’s hard to remain outside with only a sweater or sweatshirt.
  • Wear a hat.
  • Wear gloves with grips. (This is especially important for children who love the play equipment outside.)
  • Label everything! It’s the best way to connect those lost items with their rightful owner.

Coach Caridi has prepared her November PE Wellness Newsletter. I encourage you to check it out to learn more about what your child is doing during PE Wellness every other week.

In addition, The Waverly/ PTA Wellness Committee is looking for new members. The goal of the committee it to help create a culture of health and wellness at Waverly by developing programs and improving existing systems at the school.

We focus on 4 areas proven to improve children’s health and wellness:

Mindfulness, Outdoor Learning, Healthy School Lunch and Active Hallways

Please email debora.fillisryba@gmail.com for more information.

This month we will discuss the importance of being responsible. We encourage you to ask your child about these morning mini-lessons and how children are being responsible at school. It may also be a great time to explore ways in which your child can be more responsible at home.

Consider this article, Are You Teaching Kids Responsibility? 50 Simple Challenges to Get You Started, by Cara Sue Achterberg. The author provides suggestions by age span of your child. It is a worthy read!

Former Waverly student, Anusha, is spreading her message to promote insect conservation (saveinsects.com) and environmental sustainability by educating youth to revitalize urban landscapes that support native wildlife (livinggreenways.com). Check out her links.

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 25th, 2019

Dear Waverly Families,

On behalf of the staff of Waverly School, I’d like to wish our Waverly community a wonderful Thanksgiving, full of gratitude and celebration!

It’s Flu Season! Be sure to read the information below from the NYS Department of Health. (This flyer was also sent via The Backpack Express last week and is available in the Nurse’s Corner.)

This past Friday, we celebrated Good Deed Day and the generous support of Nick DiMarzo’s family. We received 101 gift cards! His family graciously accepted the gift cards this past weekend. (Thanks to Mrs. Ullrich for delivering them.)

During our Good Deed Day Morning Meeting, Mrs. Ness then led us in our song about being respectful. (Check out the video!)

If you would still like to support our annual collection for ECAP, please bring in a non-perishable food item by Wednesday, 11/27.

PTA/ JPA Recognition

This past week, members of the PTA Council, Executive Board of the PTA, SEPTA and JPA were recognized for their hard work on behalf of Waverly. Please join me in thanking them for everything they have done for all of our students and staff, each and every day… Below is a list (in brief) of the activities organized thus far:

Greeting new families at Bus Orientation, organizing and communicating with class parents, welcome breakfast for staff in September, membership, t-shirts, PTA after school clubs, Welcome Back evening event (including amazing handmade games), picture day, fire department visit, Greenburgh Nature Center trip, movie night, Planetarium trip, Little Flower Yoga classroom visits, ELA Night author visit, Native American workshops, picture retake day, and the upcoming Winter Wonderland.

Parties at Waverly

As you may be aware, we like to celebrate at Waverly! In the interest of the health and safety of our students, we have made some changes to our parties. For some classes, this may mean a greater focus on games and activities, in lieu of food. For other classes, it may mean that you are asked to approve a list of ingredients for items being brought into classes. We ask for your cooperation and appreciate your support!

Mark your calendars! The First Grade Winter Concert will be held on December 13th (with a snow date of 12/16/19). Visit our website for an invitation from Mrs. Ness (under “Announcements.”)

Waverly is Respectful!

November 18th, 2019

Dear Waverly Families,

This week, we celebrated World Kindness Day. During our school wide Morning Meeting, students were encouraged to display an act of kindness for their neighbor. This included a sea of hugs!

On Friday of each week, we sing a song together as an entire school. This past week, we learned the second verse of a song about being respectful. (Mrs. Ness reworked the lyrics just for us! It can be sung to the tune of This Old Man)

I like you.

You like me.

We treat friends respectfully.

We are helping, sharing,

showing kindness too.

I like getting along with you.

We can learn.

We can play.

Being respectful every day.

Always thinking of how

other people feel.

That shows our respect is real.

I like you.

You like me.

We treat friends respectfully.

We are helping, sharing,

showing kindness too.

I like getting along with you.

As a reminder, Good Deed will be this Friday, November 22nd. We will be supporting former Waverly student, Nicholas DiMarzo, and his family, as he is undergoing treatment. Please consider purchasing a gift card for the family to one of the following stores:

  • Whole Foods
  • Fresh Market
  • Trader Joe’s

Please send in all gift cards by this Friday. Don’t forget your child’s red Waverly shirt!

We will also have our annual collection for ECAP. You can also access a copy of this flyer on our website, under “Announcements.”

We will collect non-perishable foods until November 27th.

Mark your calendars! The First Grade Winter Concert will be held on December 13th (with a snow date of 12/16/19). Visit our website for an invitation from Mrs. Ness (under “Announcements.”)
