Wishing you a Happy Summer!

Wishing you a Happy Summer!

June 24th, 2019

Dear Families,

TODAY is our final Good Deed Day of the school year!

Make sure your child is wearing their Waverly shirt!

Today will be our final day of collecting snacks for the Ronald McDonald House.  Be sure to mark any items as donations, so they are not confused with classroom snacks.

Focusing on a specific word of the month and a good deed was new for Waverly this year. We have received a great deal of positive feedback from the children, who have shared ways in which they have put the words into action at home. I’d like to thank all Waverly families for the support all year!

Fancy is not just for Nancy!

“Fancy Day” will be held TOMORROW, June 25th!

In appreciation of your fundraising efforts through the Boosterthon Fun Run this year, our Morning Meeting will be a little fancy! Encourage your child to wear his or her favorite fancy attire to school. We will cheer on our students as they embark on their next academic adventure in first or second grade. Don’t forget a snack. Students will enjoy their snack on a special “Fancy Day” placemat. (There will be an 11:40 a.m. dismissal.)

Wellness Survey- Final day to participate is Wednesday, June 26th!

Here is the link to participate in a follow-up survey regarding our Wellness Program: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Q3RJSY2

If you missed the Whisper last week, here is a recap of the initial survey data:

The survey asked for your feedback in three main areas:

  • Your awareness of our Wellness Program
  • Signs of anxiety that your child may exhibit at home
  • Strategies that your child utilizes at home from our program

Survey data indicated that 80% of the responding parents were aware of Waverly’s Wellness Program. We found this data to be encouraging, and we are working with the PTA Wellness Committee to explore ways to involve more parents next year.

We found a strong relationship between parents who were aware of the program and those who saw signs of anxiety in their children. We are interested in exploring this further to determine if parents who already saw signs of anxiety in their children were more likely to make note of our program and the strategies shared, or perhaps the opposite, once parents were aware of our program, they were more likely to identify signs of anxiety in their children. This is important information, as it will help us to plan more effectively for future work with children and their families.

Finally, many parents shared that they observed their child using some of the breathing techniques that have been shared at school. We were thrilled to see the carryover of skills from school being employed at home, and are excited to continue to work.

To that end, I am asking parents to take the survey again, as we wrap up this school year. Please complete the survey using the link below. It will be available from today through the last day of school, so please do take a moment to complete it. It takes only a few minutes, but the information we glean will help us to improve our programming for the upcoming school year.

I thank you for your partnership!

Nurse Kaessler will be retiring this year, after 43 years as a nurse, 28 of which were spent at Waverly. Please join me in thanking her for her dedication to the children and families at Waverly and wishing her health and happiness in the years ahead!

If you will be moving and your child will no longer be attending Eastchester schools, please be sure to write a letter to inform our office as soon a possible. Thanks!

Thank You!

As this is our final Whisper for the 2018-2019 school year, I’d like to thank you for all you’ve done to support your child this year. Whether you volunteered with the PTA, attended a workshop, participated in a school event, or read each night with your child (or all of the above), your partnership is invaluable to making Waverly the magical place it is. If your child is moving on to another school, I wish them all the best, and look forward to seeing them around town. Be sure to download, save and print your child’s final report card. (This document may be required in order to register for fall sports.)

Wishing your family health and happiness,

Mari K. Doyle

Waverly Wellness… We need your help!

June 17th, 2019

Dear Families,

A few months ago, I requested your feedback regarding our Wellness Program through the completion of an on-line survey. Essentially, we were looking at three areas:

  • Your awareness of our Wellness Program
  • Signs of anxiety that your child may exhibit at home
  • Strategies that your child utilizes at home from our program

Survey data indicated that 80% of the responding parents were aware of Waverly’s Wellness Program. We found this data to be encouraging, and we are working with the PTA Wellness Committee to explore ways to involve more parents next year.

We found a strong relationship between parents who were aware of the program and those who saw signs of anxiety in their children.

If you are looking for ways to address your own wellness, be sure to check out the Book Corner. There is a suggestion for a text for parents as well with a special book signing and discussion at Barnes and Noble this Friday, 6/21. Be sure to check it out!

First Grade Legacy Rocks

First graders have been engaged in painting rocks during their art class to adorn our new outdoor classroom. Thanks to the PTA and Mrs. Larrea for supporting this effort. We are all looking forward to seeing how the rocks beautify our outdoor space.

The rocks will be installed once our boiler project is complete. I’ll be posting photos on Twitter over the summer. (@MariKDoyle)

Throughout the month of June, we have begun exploring all of the ways in which your child has become more independent over the course of the year. We played a game called, “Just Like Me.” Students were encouraged to point to themselves if they were able to engage in the activities presented without adult assistance. This included packing and unpacking their backpacks, buckling their seat belts, cleaning up toys, and writing their first and last name- without being reminded!

We will continue to collect snack items for the Ronald McDonald House through June 24th. Be sure to mark any items as donations, so they are not confused with classroom snacks. As always, thanks for your support.

First Grade Concert- THIS

Thursday, June 20th, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

On the day of the concert, families will be able to enter from the Bellew Avenue entrance (through the parking lot), just as you did for the Winter Concert. We will not use the main entrance. Doors will open at 9:15 a.m. for the first session, and 10:15 a.m. for the second. As you are aware, parking will be very limited, and thus it is recommended to carpool.

Apart from the concert, this is still a day of instruction for us until 11:40 a.m. There will be a PTA picnic celebration on Thursday, June 20th as well, starting at 3:00 p.m., when families are formally celebrating “moving up.”

With that being said, if you intend to pick up your child from school after either session of the concert, please follow the guidelines below to ensure the safety of all students at Waverly:

  • Send a note to your child’s teacher via the Backpack Express on the morning of the concert, indicating that you will pick your child up. (Last minute dismissal changes are not only very difficult for us, they are upsetting to the children.)
  • At the end of the concert, kindly depart from the gymnasium and walk around to the main entrance of the building.
  • At 10:10 a.m./11:10 a.m., we will reopen the doors to allow parents from each session to pick up any “walkers” who will leave early.
  • Children who have brought in change of dismissal letters will be signed out and may leave for the day.
  • You are encouraged to return at 3 p.m. for the PTA first grade picnic.

Don’t forget to have your child wear his/her Waverly shirt, or any red shirt!

Dear Families,

Our Final Workshop of the Year… Keeping your Children Engaged over The Summer

THIS THURSDAY!

June 13th, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Parents often ask how they can help keep their child from falling victim to the “Summer Slide.” This is when students lose many of the important skills they have been working so diligently to develop throughout the school year. If this is a question for you, we encourage you to join us for our final workshop of the school year. During this important hour, you will hear from our teachers about ways to keep your child motivated and learning throughout the sunny days of summer. (Hint: It’s not only about reading and writing!) You’ll also receive a calendar jam packed with activities. Mark your calendars to attend this workshop! It’s one not to be missed! We will even have a representative from the Eastchester Library on hand to share information about summer programming.  (The workshop is followed by a PTA meeting.)

The Kindergarten Alphabet Celebration was a hit!

(In this photo kindergarten students are getting ready for the “runway.”)

Students in kindergarten spent the day celebrating their knowledge of the alphabet on Friday, June 7th. The day began with cheers for the alphabet during our school wide Morning Meeting with all kindergarten and first graders. There was then a “runway” of letters, as children from different classes cheered on their friends as they paraded with their letter’s representation. A dance party was held after lunch, and the day continued with a variety of alphabet related activities. (If you have a first grader, this would be a great time to reminisce about the fun they had last year.) Special thanks to Mrs. Ullrich and our kindergarten teachers for planning this special day, and to Mrs. Burke for being a great party leader.

We have begun exploring all of the ways in which your child has become more independent. We’d encourage you to discuss this with your child and continue the trend at home.

Our Good Deed for this month will be to collect snack items for the Ronald McDonald House. We will collect items from now until Monday, June 24th. Be sure to mark any items as donations, so they are not confused with classroom snacks. Thanks in advance for your support!

First Grade Concert-

Thursday, June 20th, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Our first graders are moving on up! Please join us in the Waverly gym as they share what they have learned in music over the past two years. Check out the Complete List of Websites Compiled by Waverly Staff!

April 22nd, 2019

Dear Families,

We look forward to welcoming our students back to school tomorrow morning!

We will celebrate Teacher Appreciation week this week at Waverly. The PTA has put together a lovely lunch for our faculty and staff later in the week. (Thank you in advance!)  Please join me in celebrating our teachers for all of their hard work and dedication to the children of this community!

For the past several months, we have shared a weekly suggestion of helpful websites for you to access with your child. Our staff compiled the list to explore a variety of curricular areas. You can check out the list it its entirety, under the “Book Corner” section of this newsletter. We have suggestions that are both free and some that require a subscription. We hope you find this list to be useful as you engage in responsible technology use with your budding learner.

On Friday, April 12th, we celebrated our unique nature with a “Crazy Hair Day,” and it was a blast! Our “crazy hair” included all of the colors of the rainbow, braids, mohawks, ribbons, bows, a few “donuts”, and even a cup of hot chocolate! We celebrated by having a “Crazy Hair” parade through the kindergarten hallways. It was a lot of fun! (Below you will find photos from the event.)

Our first graders were also treated to a visit from Anusha, a former student and third grader at Anne Hutchinson School. She shared the work she is doing to save insects. I encourage you to check out her website and social media accounts:
