The Waverly Art Show is This Week!

The Waverly Art Show is This Week!

May 6th, 2019

Dear Families,

As you may have heard from your child, the word of the month for May is DETERMINED. We want to instill in our students the importance of trying, and trying again, and never giving up! (Please check out the Book Corner each week for titles that emphasize this point.)

Our Good Deed of the month will be to support our Fun Run! It takes a lot of determination to run those laps! We are very excited to engage in the run on May 15th!

We welcome all families to visit The Waverly Art Show on Thursday, May 9th!

Suggested times are as follows:

Kindergarten 4:30-6:00 p.m.

First Grade 6:15-7:45 p.m.*

If you are unable to make the scheduled time, feel free to join the other session.

Mrs. Larrea and Ms. D’Orazio (Zohar) have been hard at work with the children throughout the year, and are eager to share the fruits of their labor with you. Please join us! As noted on the flier below, you will find children’s work on the bulletin board outside of their classroom. In addition, kindergarten clay creations will appear on the bulletin boards in the hallway leading to first grade classrooms. We look forward to seeing you there!

Waverly is Beautified!

Thanks to all of the families who came out to support our Beautification Day, and Outdoor Classroom dedication! Be sure to check out my photos on Twitter!

Waverly Appreciates Our Teachers!

Check out the Complete List of Websites Compiled by Waverly Staff!

April 22nd, 2019

Dear Families,

We look forward to welcoming our students back to school tomorrow morning!

We will celebrate Teacher Appreciation week this week at Waverly. The PTA has put together a lovely lunch for our faculty and staff later in the week. (Thank you in advance!)  Please join me in celebrating our teachers for all of their hard work and dedication to the children of this community!

For the past several months, we have shared a weekly suggestion of helpful websites for you to access with your child. Our staff compiled the list to explore a variety of curricular areas. You can check out the list it its entirety, under the “Book Corner” section of this newsletter. We have suggestions that are both free and some that require a subscription. We hope you find this list to be useful as you engage in responsible technology use with your budding learner.

On Friday, April 12th, we celebrated our unique nature with a “Crazy Hair Day,” and it was a blast! Our “crazy hair” included all of the colors of the rainbow, braids, mohawks, ribbons, bows, a few “donuts”, and even a cup of hot chocolate! We celebrated by having a “Crazy Hair” parade through the kindergarten hallways. It was a lot of fun! (Below you will find photos from the event.)

Our first graders were also treated to a visit from Anusha, a former student and third grader at Anne Hutchinson School. She shared the work she is doing to save insects. I encourage you to check out her website and social media accounts:

Waverly Grows Confident Readers!

The New Teacher Bench

See below for more information!

March 26th, 2019

Dear Families,

The Eastchester School District’s Literacy Committee has continued its work this year under the leadership of Mrs. Susan Chester. Members of the Committee, including Waverly’s own Mrs. Borowsky, Ms. Chiappelli, Mrs. Conrad, Ms. Kelly,  Mrs. Mastocciolo, Ms. Santos, Ms. Tortorella, Mrs. Ullrich, and myself, have been reading the book From Striving to Thriving, How to Grow Confident, Capable Readers, by Stephanie Harvey and Annie Ward. This book focuses on strategies to help strengthen students’ reading behaviors. There are several recommendations that resonated with the Committee. One specific practice that I’d like to share is the importance of reading series texts. On the surface, reading books in a series is just plain fun. The reader gets familiar with the characters and the repeating patterns in texts (like how the tree becomes “absolutely still” in the Magic Tree House series). It is that fun and familiar nature of these texts that students find so appealing and motivational. In Striving, the authors note that “Enthralled series readers swap books with friends, gossip about characters as if they were real, and commiserate together during the long wait for new releases.” (p. 102)

Interested in series texts for your children? Check out the website below for some popular choices:

Book series- 1st grade and beyond

Book series- Kindergarten and beyond

Remember, these series texts are great for parents to read to children, with children, or children can read them on their own, when they’re ready. Looking for more book choices for family read alouds? Check out the Book Corner on our website each week!

Outdoor Classroom Progress Continues…

Work on the outdoor classroom has continued. The teacher bench has been installed and the cushions are in!

Thanks to Mrs. DeRise and the members of the Waverly PTA/Wellness Committee.  We are looking forward to some sunny days to bring the children outside to explore.

First Graders Learned about Braille

As you may be aware, first graders have been learning about how some students use special technology to help them learn. This past week, all first grade classes were treated to a visit from Dr. Rebecca Renshaw, a Waverly parent and superintendent of the Lavelle School for the Blind in the Bronx.

Dr. Renshaw brought in her Braille writer and showed students how she wrote out all of our first grade students’ names. Be sure to ask your child to share their name in Braille! Dr. Renshaw also provided a Braille alphabet card, so students can practice on their own. Several books in Braille were donated to the Waverly library, so children can read at home.

Most importantly, Dr. Renshaw compared and contrasted students at her school with students at Waverly. We found that children have many things in common! While her students may read and write in a different way, they love to learn, make friends, play, have fun, read, write and do mathematics… just like us!

Our students were intrigued by this distinct form of writing and generated many thoughtful questions during the lesson. Checkout the website for the Lavelle School for the Blind for more information. https://www.lavelleschool.org/

Reaching Out!

If you have reached out to a teacher regarding your child, kindly note that they may take between 24 and 48 hours to return your email or phone call. It often takes time to collect information to best respond to your query. (Teachers are not checking email throughout the day; they are teaching! And for this reason emails to teachers with dismissal changes can not be accepted.) Thanks in advance for your patience!

We will collect old markers throughout the month of March, until Good Deed Day, This Friday, March 29th.

Don’t forget to have your child wear their Waverly shirt (or another red shirt) as well!

Spring at Waverly!

The Keychain Dilemma

(Please read below!)

March 18th, 2019

Dear Families,

In the coming months, we will begin the process of placing students in their new classes for next year. It  is quite an arduous task! We strive to achieve heterogeneous groups and balanced classes. We consider a number of factors, some of which include: social emotional development, academic program needs, language proficiency, and even future school. Our placement teams work hard to create the best learning environment for all Waverly youngsters. Given the thought put into this process on our end, you can surely appreciate why we do not take parent requests. That being said, if you would like to forward concerns you have about your child’s specific placement, please do so by Friday, May 3rd, 2019.

Kindly note:

  • Requests for a specific teacher will not be honored.
  • Younger siblings will not necessarily have the same teacher as the elder sibling.
  • Letters received after the May 3rd deadline can not be taken into consideration.
  • As in the past, you will be able to view your child’s placement via Home Access in late August, after we have screened any new students.

The Keychain Dilemma

We have noticed an uptick in the number of tiny toys and keychains students are bringing to school. While these may be wonderful items to play with at home, they are causing a bit of stir with our young students. Children get upset when their toy is lost, and teachers are finding the items to be a great distraction during learning time. A Shopkin or Pokemon card in a student’s desk can prove quite disruptive to a room full of five and six-year-olds. With this in mind, we ask that you refrain from allowing children to bring in toys and keychains to school. If your child has a special item to share for show and tell, please remind them to leave the item in their backpack until the teacher tells them to take it out. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

Our Good Deed of the month will be collecting old, dry markers to recycle via the Crayola recycling program.

Keep sending in those dry markers! We will collect old markers throughout the month of March, until Good Deed Day, Friday, March 29th.

Waverly World Read Aloud Day!!

Students from the EGO Club at EHS visited to read to our students!

March 4th, 2019

Dear Families,

This past Friday, we had the great pleasure to welcome members of the EGO club from Eastchester High School who read a wonderful story to all of our students in celebration of World Read Aloud Day. Please read about it further under “Morning Meeting” below. (We’d like to thank the EHS students, and advisors, Ms. Nancy Brown and Ms. Jean Ahern-Kenny for helping us organize the event.)

EHS students visiting classes, and a chance for a sibling picture!

Early literacy is at the heart of what we do at Waverly and we are thrilled to have been able to partner with EHS to further our cause, for this our third year. Apart from all of the wonderful lessons and activities in which your child is engaged each and every day in their classroom and specials, below please read about just a few of the other things we do at Waverly to drive home the importance of reading and writing:

  • We have a print-rich environment and we encourage students to read everything. Our recent “100th Day Museum” displayed a variety of items that students created at home and in school. (I posted a number of pictures on Twitter.)
  • We promote the sharing of favorite stories. It’s one of the reasons we ask families to bring in a child’s favorite book to read on the student’s birthday. For the past several years, many first grade classes asked parents to bring in a favored story in lieu of a food item. Teachers found that the children relished the opportunity to share a cherished story from home with their classmates and teacher, and so we made it a school wide activity! Waverly students have given us great feedback about this special way of celebrating their birthday in school.

A kindergarten student recently drew a picture of her mom reading to the class on her birthday.

  • We share a book recommendation each week in the Whisper. These texts are often recommended by our staff, and many have connections to the curriculum, either reinforcing the word of the month (character development), season, or a particular topic that is of interest to our young learners.
  • We reinforce reading and writing through our “Good Deed of the Month.” A few months have included writing to children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and this past month, to sailors aboard the U.S.S. John C. Stennis. (We are thrilled to have collected 201 cards to send to our courageous sailors.)

This month, we will focus on HONESTY, and the importance of being honest in all that we do. To kick off our word of the month, students from EHS read the book, Ruthie and the (Not So) Teeny Tiny Lie, by Laura Rankin. To learn more about this book, visit the Book Corner on our website. It is updated EACH and EVERY week with a great text for families to share.

We will share our Good Deed of the month in the next Whisper.

PTA Club Reminders:

  • Be sure to send a note for EACH and EVERY day your child attends a club.
  • Kindly refrain from sending your child to clubs if they were out sick from school that day.

In honor of our word of the month, COURAGE(ous), we invite all Waverly families to celebrate courage by writing to our Nation’s sailors. Using the paper attached to the Whisper, you can write a letter of introduction and encouragement to U.S. sailors serving on the U.S.S. John C. Stennis.

Encourage your child to follow the guidelines below:

  • Introduce yourself! Share a drawing or writing about yourself and include your FIRST NAME and age.
  • Send a greeting! Wish our sailors health and safety as they are far from home.
  • Celebrate their courageousness! Adding a note of thanks can brighten their day.
  • Share what makes you brave! Include a sentence or picture of a recent act of courage.
